Our Aims
From Freebrighton
We have a broad vision, and above all, campaign for a free-thinking and open society that allows creativity to flourish. We reject conformity in favour of innovation.
We campaign against laws that enslave us rather than solving real problems. We believe that humans should be free to make choices about their own lives and should not be forced to "play the system".
Specifically within Brighton, we campaign locally for:
- The abolition of the ridiculous restrictions on Photography in public. Tourism is essential to Brighton, and the use of terror legislation to prevent normal photography is excessive.
- The abolition of the controls on drinking in public in Brighton. This goes way in excess of the national law, and was brought in without any public consultation. There is not even any signage stating that Brighton is a controlled drinking zone. The only time you know it is when you get stopped, and you must hand over all alcohol on your person, even unopened cans that you have just bought from the supermarket.
- The end of stupid ID-checking when you wish to buy alcohol at a supermarket, and the fact that you cannot buy alcohol if you are with someone under 18, regardless of the reason (e.g. doing the weekly shopping with the kids).
- The abolition of the licensing system for Leafleting in Brighton. The dissemination of information is a basic freedom that we should not have to pay for.
- The abolition of the licensing system for Live Music in Brighton. Live music is the lifeblood of the culture of Brighton, and pubs should be free to provide entertainment as they feel fit.
- The abolition of the law that forces people to have CRB Checks if they wish to work with children. We believe that such checks should be a tool to fall back on, rather than a system that everybody is forced to use.
Health-and-safety = Dumbing-down
We believe that the above rules, in conjunction with other "health-and-safety"-type legislation, cause a form of dumbing down, whereby people just follow sets of rules instead of actually thinking about stuff.
We believe that good people are in the majority, and that given the freedom, these people are naturally vigilant and will be able to spot potential terrorists, paedophiles and other troublemakers using their own mental faculties. We do not need the "authorities" or other jobsworthies to tell us what to do.
